about

Channelling the childhood trauma of riding a bicycle along a macrocarpa lined dirt road out the back of Wanaka to the small hamlet of Albert Town. The trees were often home to hordes of Australian magpies, who are notoriously territorial at breeding times, and are well known for their habit of dive bombing anything that moves within range of their nest. A young fella on a push bike was a prime target. This was well before NZ law was introduced requiring cyclists to wear protective helmets (although protection from magpies wasn't the main aim of that law). Consequently, on many occasions swooping magpies scraped my scalp as I pedaled through the firing line.

The macrocarpa rows and their magpies are gone from here now, replaced by SUVs cruising the now sealed road that runs past million dollar exclusive homes. Albert Town is just another wing of the endless quest for lifestyle bliss. The memory of pedaling a bike down a dirt road next to a river with snow covered alps for a backdrop seems another world away. I can live without the magpies though. Bastards.
