about

The definitive remastered edition of an album that was first self-released as a limited cdr for a 2005 UK/Ireland tour with Josephine Foster and James Blackshaw, before seeing a proper CD issue on Digitalis in 2006.

Red Lion was designed to be heard in one sitting, with all the tracks sequenced together to represent a journey that starts in amongst the chaos of the urban landscape before leaping over the city walls and high tailing it to the supposed utopian ideal of the countryside with its veil of tranquility, which in a country of 60 million is largely as superficial as it sounds.

It was the first of many semi-political reflections on the state of life in the UK in the mid-2000s. In 2004 it seemed there was still hope, as long as you were adept at avoiding the cracks in the pavement. Red Lion is therefore relatively peaceful, with almost folk-like pastoral meditations. However, this reverie is broken somewhat by a May Day street march recorded in London's Red Lion Square in the shadow of anti-war activist and Labour politician Fenner Brockway, which felt apt given the Blair government was at that point plummeting into the tangled abyss of the fallout from the Iraq invasion.

The recordings on Red Lion were largely made live in one take onto a mini disc recorder using a 12 string electric guitar in an open C tuning, filtered through a primitive version of Ableton on a laptop. The field recordings were added as overdubs during the editing and mixing process.

Dedicated in part to my grandmother who died in November 2004 and whose voice appears at the end of the album.
